High levels of nitrates in the water are DANGEROUS and the legal limit in potable water is 50mg/l. Levels higher than this, and the water can cause problems to people and animals alike; often we see this as a common threat to farm animals. This is generally the only way to tell (without testing) if there are nitrates in the water. In fact, it has been suggested that water with a high nitrate concentration can turn an infant’s skin a bluish color after extended exposure.
